Understanding and Treating Incontinence: What Causes Urinary Incontinence and How to Regain Bladder Control

Dispels the usual pessimism
This is a very informative summary of modern thinking with regard to the prospects for successfully overcoming (not just alleviating or minimizing) incontinence for many patients, by designing and then following an appropriate PT regimen. Starting from the premise that there is no need to accept the pessimistic view often given to such patients, that they are just going to have to live with a certain level of incontinence, Sarah Haag explains the reasons why a PT regimen designed with consideration of the patient's lifestyle and goals can often be life-changing for the patient. This book should also be read by caregivers who may need to be more informed as to modern PT practice in this area, so as to be able to give their patients a more realistic idea of what is possible.

Not very detailed
Basic information, lacked detail and strategies. I expected more in-depth content. Book is very thin, more like a pamphlet, expensive for what it is.

Clear guidance for urinary incontinence.
Disclaimer: I have met the author and attended one of her courses.I read this book with interest, having attended one of Sarah Haag's courses for therapists who are not specialised in pelvic health issues.Written in an accessible and uncomplicated style, with clear diagrams, this book outlines the elements that may contribute to urinary incontinence, and translates some of the research evidence into easy-to-understand, practical advice. There are many positive things to be taken from this book, particularly for people experiencing urinary continence problems. I can see this could be used at least a few ways:If you are trying to find ways to deal with the problem for yourself, this is a great place to start. If you are someone who wants to understand what are the possible contributors to your continence problem this is a great resource to improve your knowledge. If you have already visited a physical therapist / physiotherapist, and you are looking to support that treatment, and have a reference resource.Any physical therapists / physiotherapists who are not specialised in treating pelvic health problems: If you are looking for a resource to understand urinary incontinence better, and provide some first-line advice for the people who come to see you, this is also a good book for you.

It's not normal and it is treatable!
This was a a short but very good read. As a physiotherapist of 20+ years and having spent time in recent years getting better educated on pelvic health and treating incontinence in older adults, this would have been an amazing resource to have a few years ago to introduce me to the basics. It's the kind of information about urinary incontinence that would likewise be really helpful for students (PTs, OTs, RNs, MDs, etc) to introduce language helpful for talking with patients. And from a patient perspective, this hits on many key concerns that I've had expressed to me (as well as with my own issues) by patients about what's normal and if urinary incontinence will ever get better. The language and wording is non-threatening, non-judgmental, and very informative. And it's written in a way that makes the information accessible to people with various levels of education. My only recommendation is that it's eventually made available in other languages!
