I was using a mesh strainer to collect all the hair from my drain and it worked fine. Saw the Tubshroom and thought I would try it. It works at collecting the hairs but it completely slows down the drainage of the water in the tub. You end up standing in a puddle while you shower and all the hair and soap now linger in tub.I went back to using the strainer.

Half Truth Advertisement
Let's cut to the chase. While I like this product and I would recommend it the advertisement is a bunch of bull.I have owned this product for a few weeks. I have a little over shoulder length curly thick hair. (in case you were wondering) I tested it for a week because I wanted to give it a good amount of time to give myself an unbiased opinion. The advertisement shows hair going down the drain and getting caught in the TubShroom BUT doesn't show hair with hair product, soap, or dirt and oils from your body. The mixture of these things actually does cause a bit of a drainage problem and after about a few days of use water began to collect at the bottom of my tub. My husband actually took it out while he showered at one point so he didn't have to stand in it. So I suggest changing it out every few days and not a week.Cleaning is also a bit difficult. Because most people shower at least once a day the TubShroom is always wet. In the ads they clean it while the hair is completely dry so it just slides right off. Well the hair product and in my case my husbands alternating shower schedule with mine keeps it wet making it a bit harder to "Remove the hair with one effortless move."After cleaning it I rinsed mine off with hot water and a little bit of Dawn dish soap to get off the hair product and all the other grimey stuff off. I've since put it back and have found a good schedule as far as cleaning it goes and haven't had any drainage problems since. It's a good product and I do recommend it but I do suggest considering the things that I've mentioned.

Definitely not worth the tradeoff
I replaced my old metal shower drain cap with a tubshroom. The tubshroom does indeed take another couple of showers to clog up.BUT, once it does clog up, and it so definitely does, it's a total pain to clean all the hair and soap scum from the device because the hair is threaded through tons of tiny holes. You need to take it out of the shower and laboriously pick at the thing over the toilet, it takes a good two minutes and is of course a disgusting process. Compare that to my old metal cap, where I could just reach down and scrape up the "mat" of hair and soap scum in a single motion. Still disgusting, but a 2 second operation. Also, the tubshroom got little black splotches on the silicone which I couldn't scrape off. Not sure if the material itself was degrading or if it was black mold. Either way, not happy about it!I tossed the tubshroom in the garbage and put my old metal cap back in the shower. The search continues.

Don't hesitate! Buy it, you will no regret it!!!
I have to say I was a bit skeptical about this product when I first heard of it. After several recommendations from friends (and needing to find another solution for the hair clogs) I went ahead and purchased it.We are a household of 3 woman, 2 with short hair and 1 with long hair, not to mention several family member visits a month with multiple people having longer hair. Oh, and a medium haired dog that does get washed in the shower.I tried 3 other drain catchers while i was waiting for this one to arrive. None could hold up and frankly were nasty to clean out.I removed the metal catcher with a screwdriver and placed the Shroom in its place (as directed by the printed instructions on the box), at first it looked funny sticking out a bit (the instructions tell you this is normal) and my mom thought I had dropped a giant button in the shower (top view). The first shower was a grand success. Not only was the water able to properly drain (goodbye standing in a pool of your own dirty bathwater!!!!) but the hair dropped into the catcher without it collecting on the top (so it was not visible to one taking a shower). Once I was done, I didn't think it had worked since all the hair drained, little did i know it was draining into the spool. All the hair that had gone down was indeed caught and very, very simple to remove from the spool. I grabbed tissue and just "peeled" the hair off and threw away the trash. Voila! I don't know why I had ever hesitated. I like it so much and it is so useful, i am including it in all my housewarming gifts. It is the item you never knew you needed nor wanted. But now that i have it I am so much better for it.

It's amazing how much this thing catches considering it's this cheap ...
Update #2: 2.5 years later and I’ve only had to unclog the drain once, and I believe it was just because of soap scum.Update: more than a year later and I have yet to have to unclog the drain!I am one of those people who clogs the shower drains with my hair. It got to the point where I brushed my hair well before getting in and then kept a brush in the shower to wrap the excess hair in while shampooing, and would STILL clog the drain every 6 weeks or so. I've had this about 2 months now and thought I'd really test it out by no longer brushing my hair before or during the shower. No clogs! It's amazing how much this thing catches considering it's this cheap looking piece of rubber that doesn't even fit well. I will say, it's much easier (and a lot less slimy) to clean when dry. And the loose fit (& lightweight) means sometimes my cat thinks he can play with it again and I'll find it in the bedroom floor. I tell everyone I know about this thing.

Rubbish
Very poor design. The instructions ask you to remove your current drain cover with a screwdriver and insert this; bad idea. Undoing the screw will de-couple your tub from the wastepipe (if it is similar to mine, and mine is standard). In most cases this will result in a steady leak under your tub. Im sure I can modify it with a pair of scissors to work for me but whats the point in buying the bloody thing if have to get all arty and crafty for it to work.

Very efficient in catching hair
Have been using this in the shower for over a year now, it has survived all of the hot water and still remains intact, in good condition. Catches alot of hair that would otherwise go down the drain. Really good idea and very useful.Only problem is that this is not designed for UK standard bath tubs. When placed in position it sticks out quite abit so you have to make sure not to accidentally move it with your feet while taking a shower. Would be great if we could get some that would fit UK bath tubs.

Doesn't fit in my plug
I bought this assuming it would fit in every plug, however it just keeps falling over in my bathtub, i think its due to the depth of the plug and stuff but any way it doesn't really work as it constantly falls over. The reason for the 4 stars is because one time i managed to jam it into place and it was amazing, so easy to clear out the plug at the end of my shower and there were no drainage problems during my shower (I usually have to stop once or twice during a shower to remove the hair build up as it stops the water from draining). However on emptying it out i couldn't jam it back in so now it sits on the side till i move house and then maybe it will fit the drain?

Clearly a knock off
I meant to return this but forgot about it. Now I’m stuck with it. This is clearly a knock off. Does not say tubshroom on the top like the legitimate product. The product came zip tied to the cardboard (no plastic insert as shown in the product photos online), and the packaging looks like it’s been purchased and returned many times based on the crinkling and pulling apart of the cardboard. But don’t worry, it comes with a large made in China sticker that says ‘New’ stuck right in the middle of the packaging!! The product itself may work fine, I haven’t tried it yet. But when you order a brand name product you expect to get that product, not a cheap remake. Very disappointed in this.

Easy to clean
Edited. Below is first review but after a few months this has gone so mouldy and I have had to throw away. I keep my bathroom clean and aired. Would not get silicone version again. This is really, really good at collecting hair and general fluff. I have thick hair and shed about a foot each wash and it seems to catch it without clogging up the flow. It could be cheaper I’m sure, I bought the green one as it was cheaper but you can’t really tell as you don’t see much of it. Easy to clean down and remove hair from.
