Nutrisearch Comparative Guide to Nutritional Supplements: A Compendium of Products Available in the United States and Canada

Get to the bottom of all the confusion...
This is sort of the 'Consumer Reports' approach to sorting out the various products that are available. A comprehensive and scientific method of evaluating hundreds (1500, actually!) of products, all of which claim to be 'the best'. I sell nutritional supplements and was delighted to find that my products are among the very few ranked as the best in this evaluation!!I have read criticism of this book by some who are concerned that there was a connection between the author, MacWilliams, and the USANA company, which is the one of the very few "Top-Rated" products (MacWilliams himself acknowledges that he is a consultant for several manufacturers). After reviewing the evaluation methodology, and considering that products from 5 other manufacturers, with which MacWilliams has no relationship whatsoever (as far as I can determine) are also "Top-Ranked", I think it is clear that there is no indication whatsoever of any conflict of interest. Some have criticized that one of the researchers who developed the "blended laboratory standard" against which the products were compared is on USANA's Medical Advisory Board (this is clearly stated in his bio in 'The Comparative Guide' so there is no attempt to hide this information). But, every one of the researchers who participated in development of the "blended laboratory standard" are experts in their fields... OF COURSE their advice is sought by many companies in the industry. Those who seek to inpugn this publication are most likely venting 'sour grapes' that their product(s) didn't fare well in the comparison... perhaps their effort would be better directed at improving the quality their products, rather than trying to discredit what appears to be such a fair and balanced evaluation!

A Valuable Resource for Anyone Concerned About Their Health
As a longterm consumer and a distributor of nutritional supplements, I like to know objectively what I'm taking and recommending to others. The Comparative Guide is a great educational tool and reference book that helps me to know that what I am using and recommending is a quality product based on the most current scientific research and is a good value. It is shocking that some of the top names in vitamin products are so deficient in the vital nutrients for which they charge trusting consumers so much. More consumers should read this book before consigning a major health decision to the best infomercial celebrity or salesperson who comes along.By the way: I bought the first edition of this guide when I was a USANA distributor, but have since used MacWilliams' recommendations to choose an over-the-counter product that is of comparable quality but at half the price (and suits my body better). So I don't buy the argument that this is all an elaborate sales tool to sell to USANA distributors and slam all the others. Those interested in their lifelong wellness need to be educated consumers of nutritional supplements so they don't waste their money on products long on hype and short on substance. Caveat emptor! (Let the buyer beware!)Buy this book and share it with friends and loved ones. If you only could buy one book to help you understand the complexities of optimal nutrition, this is the volume to have.

Do you what your putting in your body with those 'vitamins'
I heard about this book over a year ago and was fascinated. Recently my husband and I realized that we needed to start taking some multi vitamins and like a good wife I refused to buy anything off of your regular grocery or pharmacy shelf, knowing from this book and some medical practitioners that most of those products are of poor quality and don't add much to your diet unless you plan on eating the whole bottle everyday, never mind the potential toxins. The only difficulty with finding the perfect multi vitamin is cost. Make sure you do a lot of price research into the vitamins you might potentially choose. We found a great price online for the item we chose. It is more than half of the SRP and we're now on our way to healthier selves. My only issue with the book is it near exclusive to multi-vitamins, which makes it difficult to choose other supplements like omega 3-6-9. We didn't go with a standard brand for that either, but it's important to be wary of purchasing from the same brand too. The reviews in the book show that not all products from the same brand are ranked alike.

Farley W. Brown, DC, APRN, FNP-C
This book was an eye opener as was his first book. I really had no idea that there was that much difference in nutritional supplements. I knew that all of them (the manufactures) all made the same claim that they were the best but before I read this book I just didn't suggest any particular brand due to that fact of no information that was reliable and all was way too biased. This book in a relatively unbiased fashion dispels many myths about nutrition. It breaks down the industry and rates them head to head in a variety of subjects.I would like the book in the future to include a full line approach of each company as there is "intramanufacturer" variation noted by seeing that a given manufacturer will have some rated well and some rated pathetically, this makes one wonder if they manufacture some and buy the others and simply repackage them under their own label as I suspect. This would be good to know so one could pick and choose among the companies specific products. This book is an excellent book for anyone making vitamin and mineral purchases, not only a practitioner such as myself.Buy this book and use it.Farley W. Fantastic Guide for you and yours
I bought it so that I could have a guide to review what nutritional supplements are great and that works.Too many products make claims of being good for your health when in fact this Guide shows which doand which really don't. I like helping my friends and family make better decisions on how to choosewhat is best for them and how it delivers satisfaction with their product. Only the best is good enough…..

Suppliment guide
Good book with extra information on how supplements work and the best type that the body can obsorb. But still a bit skeptical on how supplements are rated. Still happy with my purchase though.
