Great tool to have on hand! I actually needed it and used it the first day I opened the package. It works on 12VDC as well and let me verify a blown fuse. Not just for HVAC applications.Made in China.

Finding wiring shorts is a time consuming and painfully frustrating task. This tool’s sole purpose is to temporarily replace the fuse and provide a visual indicator that as short is/isn’t present. If the LED on the device is on, the short is still present and the device acts as a resettable fuse. You continue to chase the source of the short with power turned off which also resets the device. When you think you’ve found the source of the short, you reapply power and check to see if the device’s LED is off. If it is, you’ve found the short and can replace the device with a new fuse. If the LED is still on, you repeat the process until the LED remains off when power is applied. While the device doesn’t make the repair process significantly faster, it avoids blowing countless fuses during the process and provides a convenient LED telltale to indicate the presence of a short circuit. I haven’t had an opportunity to use this device yet and with any luck, I’ll never need it. But I’ve been through the process before and have gone through more fuses than I care to admit and I would have welcomed having one of these on hand.

I learned about these devices when I had a fuse blow on my AC. I ended up blowing a second fuse followed by deep dive wire tracing with my meter and since I didn't have extra fuses laying around (I do now) I was really worried when I started things up that it would blow again. Thankfully, I did my job right and I fixed the short but I would have felt much more comfortable if I had one of these. That's really what motivated me, both to get some extra fuses and to get one of these short detectors. You can definitely do the job without one, but this just adds some extra insurance on there. I do a fair amount of general electronics projects as well so I suspect I'll find other non-AC uses for this one too but for dealing with a blown fuse on the 24V side this is a great tool.
