Possibly the Best Children's (of all ages) Stories Ever

This is a beautiful story that we've listened to for years. The plot is fun, but what really makes it is the fantastic narration. The narrator has a lovely British accent and voices the different characters ingeniously. Now that our kids are older, we still listen to it from time to time!

Could be a good learning tool for kids

I like the fact that it's a board book and I was really hoping it would help our son with his fear of the dark. While it is a very cute story my son just isn't buying the take away from the book. He still is scared sh***less of the dark.

Skip ahead of the beginning sounds for little ones

I purchased this cd for my 5 year old Grandson, who is afraid of the dark. My daughter has to listen to the beginning first before giving him the headphones because it starts out with a scary loud chime and animal sounds that frightened my Grandson. He does enjoy the story. For a cd that is supposed to assist with children's bedtime fears I'm surprised that it starts out with eerie sounds. BUT, I gave it a rating of I LIKE IT because, once the story starts he enjoys listening to it.

Review of "The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark" Book & Plush Set =)

I received this precious little book & plush set as a gift. The set is presented in a pretty little box with a window in the front. The adorable little toy owl looking out at you from inside the box is an automatic, "Awww!" =)The paperback book is a sweet story to encourage children to see the positive aspects of nighttime and the dark. The illustrations are truly lovely. =) I enjoyed a few British words used in the story-- "Wellingtons" and "Father Christmas". When I read the story to the children for whom I nanny, the older ones quickly surmised the meanings of those unfamiliar words (we are in the USA). =) All of the children (ages seven months - nine years) loved the book and have asked me to read it to them again and again. =) The older kids (ages eight and nine) have also read it to the younger ones. =)The story is so sweet. It shows growth on so many levels. As little "Plop", the owlet, makes his way through the story, we see him learning the many ways that nighttime and the dark can be appreciated, as little by little, he overcomes his fear. As he is introduced (by a series of kindly characters) to positive and happy aspects of the dark, Plop's perspective and thoughts begins to change. At the same time, Plop's sleeping habits are beginning to mirror his parents', and his flying skills improve! =) By the end of the book, Plop is a happy little night bird who goes off in the dark to hunt with his parents-- the owly equivalent to "happily ever after"!! =)The tiny plush owlet that comes in this set is ever so cute. =) It fits in the palm of my hand. The children are completely enchanted by it and hold it gently in their hands as if it was a real baby bird! =) They take turns holding it as we read the book. =)This set is so sweet, sure to be enjoyed by any lucky child who receives it! =) Because of the cute presentation, it would make a lovely birthday or baby shower gift.I give this lovely book & toy set five owly stars!! =) *****

Great story and beautiful illustrations.

Beautiful book that I remember from my childhood! I am a teacher and always read this book when we study light and shadows. It's a very cute story but is British so some of the parts of the story don't make sense in the US! Beautiful illustrations and a good story for all children, especially those afraid of the dark. It's a classic!

Superb recording of a great story. A constant delight.

This is our very favorite of the many recorded books my daughter and I have enjoyed. More children should hear it! It's a perfect children's gift for a range of ages, probably especially for 2-6 year olds. My daughter has listened to it many, many times over about six years so far. I have also heard it many times and yet still enjoy it. The reader is amazingly adept at doing different voices and accents for the various characters in the story. It's a story of overcoming a fear through exploration. Through asking people what they think about it, the character, Plop, becomes increasingly familiar with the dark and less afraid of it as he sees it in new ways. The book is funny as well as wise.

Read, read to and enjoy

The owl who was afraid of the dark is my favorite book to read to/with a child. The story is nice. Quite by the way you and the child find out that it is about a real species of owls, whose young do stay awake in the daytime. It makes you and the child more observant about birds and owls. And, there more you know, the more you see, the more you enjoy. I hope this book will become available again soon.

This is a heavily abridged version

I didnt know this was an abridged version, so am disappointed. The note in the description is very easily missed unfortunately, and I think it should be far more prominent to avoid this. The book itself is beautiful, the illustrations are gorgeous

A lovely book that we can now listen to

First the story: I have loved this book ever since I was given it as a child. The adventures of the night bird, Plop, who is afraid of the dark always fascinated me. It's a great story for pointing out all the wonderful qualities of nighttime & darkness to a child who may be nervous about such things. It also shows them you can grow to be brave and conquer your fears. Of course it is also just an wonderful tale with beautiful illustrations. Now for the cd: it's a great addition, especially as it has not been shortened. As we had already purchased (several copies!) of the book ( The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark ) for our children we can now leave them to listen quietly to the story alone, while they look through the book. Although, I must admit to prefering to either read the story to them myself at bedtime, or sit with them and listen too. Not sure who really enjoys it more! The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark

Great as a bedtime story

My son loves this book. I have it 4 stars as the text is a bit small so reading it with bedside lamps on, you have to hold it a bit closer than other books.Just a small moan but overall great book about a young owl getting to know and appreciating the dark.

My wife's favourite childhood book

This is my wife's favourite childhood book so when we were asked to get a book for our new baby niece we thought this would be a winner. It is a fantastic story and the art work is beautiful. Definitely recommend.
