Q: is it still necesary to smoke the hide after using this product?

Not unless you want the hide to be a darker color. For a chemical tanning formula, this stuff works pretty good. I have used 3 bottles.

Q: What is the shelf life of this product?

I hope quite a while as I still have the bottle I purchased. Im pretty sure it will last a long time especially if you havnt opened it but even then I bet it will still be good. I know I have used it in the past on rabbit hides, coon, coyote and it was through quite a span in time. I bet its as good as when you bought it. Shake it up good before using.

Q: The tanning solution got in the fur of my bear hide all around the edges and on the head. Is there a way to clean the sticky residue from the fur?

It will eventually dry, and should brush out.
