Perhaps my favorite Godzilla movie

For me, a good Godzilla movie has a fair share of entertaining monster apperances/fights, a coherent message, and convincing human characters to interact with the monsters in their world and convey that message. I think this movie has it in spades. Godzilla fights not only his mechanical counterpoint, but Rodan as well! The humans are themselves responsible for Mechagodzilla, aiming to destroy Godzilla--whatever the cost. Overall, Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla II is very entertaining, able to elicit both laughter and tears at key moments. If a Godzilla movie can make me feel that much in its run time, I think it did a great job.

Excellent transfer

5 stars for the the DVD. The picture and sound is top quality. I mainly bought these for the bilingual feature. If you hate dubbing like me, these are the answer. As for the actual movies.5 stars for Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla. In this feature, the tech from the future people is utilized to create MechaGodzilla. A baby Godzilla is the key to defeating Adult Godzilla by exploiting its weak spot, it's sacral brain. Rodan is the other monster who tangles with Godzilla but later becomes his savior, giving him power to fight MechaGodzilla and keep his species alive.MechaGodzilla looks great and looks very stoic. Rodan looks awesome in this movie, except for really stiff wings, he looks great.Lots of beam fights and a steady pace make this an excellent addition to the series. This movie also is supported by an excellent music score.4 stars for Godzilla vs SpaceGodzillaIn this one, Godzilla faces off against a mutant space monster that has acquired his DNA either from Biollante or Mothra when she left into space. This movie feels like an homage to the Showa series and a small break from the serious tone of the 90's series.Baby Godzilla looks too cartoony. Space Godzilla looks great and the star of the show Godzilla looks great as always.Moguera is included an is beautifully animated. I like how they had fun making this movie having a robot that could transform and break up into smaller vehicles. This was a beautiful homage to the old shogun warrior cartoons. This DVD set is a must have for giant monster fans and Godzilla fans alike.

One of the greatest G films!

This film is the best entry in the Heisei series & one of the greatest G films of all time! Here Mechagodzilla is presented not as an alien creation, but as the latest weapon created by man to destroy Godzilla once and for all. Complicating matters is the discovery of an egg that eventually hatches a baby Godzillasaurus (Gojirasaurus in Japanese) and the appearance of the Rodan (Radon in Japanese), a monster bird with a psychic link to "Baby" (as he is named by his keepers). There is a nice "life against artificial life" theme running through the script - literally represented in the Garuda/Mechagodzilla and Rodan/Godzilla scenes. Baby is light years ahead of Minya, but still cute and cuddly (for the youngsters out there). I like how the filmmakers highlighted the emotions of the monsters: Baby crying as he is left by his "mother" so he can be adopted by Godzilla, Godzilla roaring in frustration and anger as he is unable to find the little dinosaur, Rodan's determination to assist Baby even as he lies dying. Such moments elevate this film above other monster films that too often treat the monsters as nothing more that king-sized nuisances. Performances by the cast range from good to excellent and the story moves along at a brisk clip. As usual, there are many spfx highlights: Rodan & Godzilla squaring off on Adona Island, Mechagodzilla rising from dry dock to battle his reptilian nemesis and, of course, the final showdown between the monsters that will decide the fate of Baby. Akira Ifukube contributes one of his best scores. The CD is long out of print but well worth seeking out (just be prepared to spend a pretty penny to get it). I cannot recommend this film highly enough. If you love Godzilla, chances are you will love this film too!
