Garth Ennis does it again

A great, great horror mystery comic from my favorite comics writer of all time. Ennis leaves behind all of the shock and outrage to deliver a truly engaging mystery.

Dark classic!

Oh man, this is dark. Really dark. Great twisty plot, going back and forward in time. Love it, brrrr....

A Walk Through Hell, Vol. 1

A Walk Through Hell, Vol. 1 by Garth Ennis & Goran Sudzuka is a free NetGalley e-comicbook that I read in early February. Two criminal investigators, Shaw and McGregor, are stuck in a morbid time loop while the comic book recalls their shared mortal history with shock social media, blasé coworkers who have seen it all, and a slow creeping sense of depressed rumination and murderous horror gripping them both. In each cell, there’s sharpness, yet a grayed, shower grime kind of clarity, sort of like Silent Hill or the X-Files but without a speck of humor.

Feels like Garth Ennis was just "Phoning this in"

Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad book. For the most part, reading it was a breeze, but I wish MORE happened. I bought the trade paperback because I read the first issue and was intrigued. Unfortunately, I couldn't get my hands on the next issue at the Comic Book Store, so I decided to wait until the first arc was collected. So, not giving anything away, the two main characters are FBI agents working on a case that leads them into a warehouse. The warehouse is a mystery. It seems no one can escape it and the horrors inside. This pretty much sums up the first chapter/issue. Like I said, I found that interesting. What will they witness while trapped inside? How will they escape? And why is all of this happening in the first place? So here's the thing, Garth Ennis tries to explain most of it in flashback and I guess that's fine but very little else happens in the present. Granted, it's just a first arc and to be honest I still want to see how this plays out but I wish I knew a little bit more about the antagonist and why the warehouse held such powerful (Supernatural?) forces and how they're all connected. Or at least a clue, just enough to push me to buy the next collected arc.I love "Preacher" so I figured this was worth checking out. It's not bad but considering the work Garth Ennis has done in the past, it could've been much better.

A rare miss

Garth Ennis has been so consistently fantastic I’m a little nervous I may be grading an “okay” book too harshly just out of having my initial expectations too high. But this one just didn’t do a thing for me. There is a muddled feeling here, a little political, a little moral, a little horror, but no real narrative focus and the story suffers for it. I also found the staggered sequencing a distraction here, with the flashbacks taking away from the drama instead of adding to it. Maybe the next book will pull it together but as of now.....meh.

Excellent book

an engaging storyline

Requires some patience to get along with the story initially but certainly engages the reader as it moves on. A nice read.

Different altogether

I loved this. Probably the best thing Ennis has written since Preacher. Part creepy horror, part crime drama.

Disappointing

I found this effort disappointing. I didn't know anything about the book before purchasing it but ordered it on the basis that I enjoyed much of Garth Ennis other work. Artwise it is ok without having wow factor so there would be no need to buy this for the art alone. In fact, many of the characters look alike and for that reason, the art doesn't support the reader in following the story. Story wise it is confusing, slow and doesn't reward perseverance. I believe that the book ends on a cliffhanger for Volume 2 but I was so bored that I gave up half way through.

Meh

A friend loaned me the physical copy of volume 2. I’d avoid. Not a satisfying ending and the story is needlessly confusing
